The Basics of Roulette

The Roulette concept consists of a table, a wheel, a ball, a Dealer, and some bets. Let us familiarize ourselves to each so we can grasp the basics of the game.

The Roulette table is a rectangular shaped one covered with felt. It has a grid with three columns and twelve rows, which house the number 1 to 36. On top of the boxes 1, 2, and 3 is the 0 box or 0 and 00 boxes (for the American version). The numbers are equally distributed in either red or black boxes.

The Roulette wheel comprises all the numbers on the Roulette table. Each number is placed on a background that is similar to what it has on the table. The European Roulette wheel has 37 slots while the American version has 38. To determine which is a winning square on the table, a ball is released on the opposite side where the Roulette wheel is spun.

Between the Roulette table and the wheel is a Dealer or Croupier. He oversees the betting, spins the wheel, releases the ball, determines the players, pays off the winning bets, and takes all the losing bets.

The bets come in form of Roulette chips. These chips differ from standard casino chips because they do not have a specific value. They are only colored so that the Dealer could determine which chips belong to whom. There are two different bets, the inside and the outside bets. The inside bets are straight bets meaning you will place your chips on specific numbered boxes on the grid. The outside bets, on the other hand, pertains to different parameters or odds that you can play around with like the even or the odd, the first twelve, the next twelve, the last twelve, etc. Inside bets are more rewarding in terms of payout.

However, they are also hard to hit. If you bet on number 17, for example, you will have 1 of 37 (or 38) chances at winning whereas if you place an even bet, you get 50% chance at a prize. Different Roulette tables follow different betting schemes. This means that minimum and maximum bet requirements may vary.

Roulette is simply a game of chance. If you happen to bet on the number or the odd where the ball falls after the Dealer spins the wheel, then you will be awarded your rightful share of winning. If it doesn't, you lose your bet. That's quite a no-brainer. Isn't it?
